How to Choose Crystals and Crystal Jewelry
Share
There are thousands of different crystals that can be found all over the world. With so many options, it can be difficult to know how to choose crystals for your needs. Fortunately, there are a few ways to pick the right crystal for you.
Crystals and gemstones have metaphysical properties. Broadly speaking, metaphysical properties refer to the belief that crystals can directly affect your physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional health. For example, bloodstone is commonly used for health and healing because it is believed to be a blood detoxifier.
Colors also have metaphysical properties. The color of a crystal can give you a hint as to its use. Green is the color of money, and green crystals help attract abundance and prosperity. Yellow reminds us of sunshine, so you can use yellow crystals for optimism and positivity.
Crystals and Chakras
Different colors are connected to different chakras, a Sanskrit word that means “wheel” or “disc” and refers to energy centers in the body.

There are seven main chakras from the base of your spine to the crown of your head:
- Root/base chakra (Muladhara) = Red
- This chakra deals with safety, stability, and survival.
- Sacral chakra (Svadhisthana) = Orange
- This chakra deals with creativity, sensuality, and sexuality.
- Solar plexus chakra (Manipura) = Yellow
- This chakra deals with identity, personal power, and self-esteem.
- Heart chakra (Anahata) = Green
- This chakra deals with acceptance, compassion, and love.
- Throat chakra (Vishuddha) = Blue
- This chakra deals with communication, expression, and honesty.
- Third eye chakra (Ajna) = Indigo
- This chakra deasl with intuition, imagination, and visualization.
- Crown chakra (Sahasrara) = Violet
- This chakra deals with consciousness, knowledge, and wisdom.
Each chakra has several different crystals that can align or balance it. Generally, the color of the crystal will match the chakra it is connected to. However, there are some exceptions. For example, black tourmaline is connected to the root chakra since it deals with grounding and stability. Rose quartz is connected to the heart chakra since it deals with love and compassion.
How to Choose Crystals Using Your Intuition
As you can see, there are a couple of ways you can choose a crystal to work with. But it’s also important to trust your intuition. If you feel drawn to a particular crystal, that can be a sign it has something to offer you. You may feel an inexplicable pull to that crystal—don’t ignore that feeling! Rose quartz might call out to you if you’re in need of emotional healing, or if you are having trouble loving yourself or others. On the other hand, you may feel completely repulsed by a crystal. That could mean you aren’t ready to work with it at this time, and that’s OK.
If you’re shopping in person, try holding different crystals in your hand to see how you vibe with them and vice versa. Really be open to feeling the energy because some crystals, like agates, have a subtle energy. Others, like moldavite, might take you by surprise with their energy. There are many different sensations you might feel from a crystal depending on what you need and where you’re at energetically.
It can take time to get acclimated to the energy of a crystal, so it is important to keep working with it before moving on to the next one. A crystal journal can help you record your experiences and help you identify the best ways to work with a particular crystal. Once you learn how to choose crystals that resonate with you, you’ll be surprised at the difference they can make in your life.
